Flir i7 is this enough resolution?

NACHI - Sat, 09/04/2010 - 22:34
Thinking of doing Johns class and w/ it getting the Flir i7.

It has 120 x 120 IR Resolution, is this enough? Or should I get a camera w/ 160 x 120?

I want to offer Thermal scans for energy audits and use it for my mold inspections.

Also to scan the building for leaks or to reassure what my findings are.

Thx,
Ray

And w/ Johns class, will the be sufficient training to do what I mentioned above?

Johns training + i7 = $2245, not too shabby

Are these ball valves OK for Natural Gas?

NACHI - Sat, 09/04/2010 - 16:35
I've seen ball valves on gas lines, but the handle is round and either blue or red. I've seen these types of ball valves (attached) usually used for water lines. Are these ball valves OK for Natural Gas supply piping?

Going into the home inspection business with infrared technology was one of the best decisions I've ever made.

Of course we all have a few kinks to work out with any type of business but dealing with FLIR has been the worst business decision I've ever made.

I bought a FLIR B200 about 9 months ago for $11k delivered. I was told how the B200 just came out and nothing better for that price range would be coming out anytime in the near future(atleast another year). 6 weeks later I see the B200(available for purchase) upgraded to DOUBLE the mega-pixels and DOUBLE the photo camera resolution and even more additional upgrades for $8,995.

I also learned the FLIR B250 and B300 were already common knowledge to FLIR reps. a month before they were on the shelf. It looks as if my FLIR rep. either didn't have a clue about what products his company offers or he was trying to push his last out-dated over-priced B200's out the door while he could.

I chalked this blame off on myself thinking I should have contacted multiple reps since the company obviously trains their reps. like used car salesmen. I also remembered all the talk of the awesome abilities to upgrade and how FLIR has a great program to trade in for an upgraded camera so I moved forward with plans on upgrading within the near future.

So here I am 9 months later, My camera was in absolute unbelievable mint condition until last week(aprox 20 inspections total use). I paid $11k for a camera so you can bet it was treated like an egg.

Well, last week the camera falls about 7 measly inches off the FLIR black pelican case I keep it in. It landed directly on the auto-focus button. The button will manually focus but when I push it in to auto-focus it does nothing.

I call FLIR completely admitting the camera fell off the case and I was more than willing to pay because it was my fault (although I still don't it should have broke with such a short fall). I was quoted a non-negotiable price of $700 for the labor and price of the button not to mention another $70 for shipping both way and not to mention that they could always find something else they think it needs..

$770 DOLLARS FOR A BUTTON!!!!!

I then decide it's just not worth spending $770 for a button I can still use to some degree. I ask for a quote for a trade in thinking I would end up spending about $2,500-$3,000 to upgrade to the B300 because that seems in my mind fair.

I get a response that FLIR is willing to give me $1,000 trade-in value after I've paid to have the $700 button repaired. That equals a $300 dollar trade-in value for a mint condition camera, that I paid $11k for 9 months ago and still under warranty.

In all the trade-in and depreciation values I've ever experienced in my life this hands down takes the gold.

FLIR's AWESOME UPGRADE OPTIONS AND TRADE-IN OPTIONS EQUALS A 99% DEPRECIATION IN A 9 MONTH PERIOD. That should show you what their cameras are really worth.

i don't own a Fluke yet but I hope to very soon. I have atleast 1-2 home inspectors contact me a month wanting advice about cameras. I've never even owned a Fluke camera but I will be 100% promoting Fluke from this day forward.

I do believe FLIR cameras are nice and I actually hate this incident has occurred. FLIR needs to WAKE UP and realize they aren't the only ones making decent cameras anymore.

Sorry for the rant, but I'm just trying to inform people of the truth behind some of the BOGUS programs FLIR uses to sell cameras and get people trapped having to pay their insane maintenance costs and laughable trade-in options.

I can assure FLIR is losing several new potential clients for every one person that has this type of experience. I just don't understand what FLIR is thinking treating the home inspection industry the way they are.
